We did it, 1 470 new homeowners this Festive Season

21 December 2023

More than 1 400 new homeowners have been created as part of the City’s Festive Deeds Challenge, originally launched to create 1 000 new homeowners by the end of December. The challenge ended today in Mitchells Plain with Mr Samsodien and Mrs Aniesah Solomons being the final recipient of this phase of this homeownership initiative.

'Wow. We've excelled in our first addition of the Festive Deeds Challenge by creating 1 470 new homeowners in less than three months – 470 more than the original target of 1 000 before the end of December. This has been a labour of love and I thank our teams on the ground for the hard work that has enabled us to meet the challenge. My direction was clear: we must shift to the highest gear and ensure we have greater delivery we will need to push ourselves more, set ambitious targets and meet them head on. The people of Cape Town deserve better and we must do better.

'It has been my greatest honour travelling the length and breadth of our City to ensure we deliver what could be the most important investment in a family: access to tenure. I am committed to continuing this momentum and prioritising home ownership over my term.

'We've set aside a total of some R21,6 million this year to deliver title deeds.

'We have more than 12 000 title deeds on the Human Settlement's registry and title deeds are such an important tool for empowerment and redress for our beneficiaries and their families. One house, one flat, one title deed, one serviced site at a time, we are committed to Building Cape Town. Together,' said the City's Mayoral Committee Member for Human Settlements, Councillor Carl Pophaim.
